SPILL

Background

Coffee is one of the world’s most consumed beverages, while millions of cups still end up cold and wasted every day. Behind every cup are months of cultivation, large amounts of water, transportation, and manual labor. Despite this, coffee is often treated as an everyday product with little perceived value. As climate change continues to impact global agriculture, coffee production is becoming increasingly unstable. Coffee risks becoming an increasingly limited resource, while large amounts still go to waste. SPILL is built around the question: How can packaging design make the value behind coffee visible and encourage people to consume it more consciously?

Solution

SPILL is a conceptual coffee brand that uses packaging design to reveal the process behind every cup of coffee. Through a multi-layered label, information is gradually uncovered step by step, from roasting in Stockholm to farming, harvesting, and resource consumption. Cut-out sections in the label allow fragments of information to become visible already from the outside, creating a physical experience of transparency and traceability. The packaging functions not only as a container for the product, but also as a tool for communicating the value behind it. By making the process visible, SPILL aims to encourage more conscious consumption and inspire people to see coffee as something worth finishing.
