Simrishamn Typeface
Background
Typography plays a key role in expressing the personality and identity of a brand. As more cities invest in bespoke typefaces to strengthen recognition and create a unique visual language, Simrishamns Kommun and Österlen currently lacks a typographic identity that reflects its cultural character. Inspired by local sign painting and arts-and-crafts traditions, the project explores how a bespoke typeface can create a stronger and more contemporary visual identity.
Solution
The typeface is a humanist sans-serif developed in two styles: an upright version, Simrishamn Text, designed for clarity in municipal communication, and an italic counterpart intended for display use. Inspired by calligraphy and script signage found in the area, the design balances expressive qualities with functional requirements. It aims to feel open, welcoming and grounded in its context. The project explores how a municipal typeface can resist the “Sea of Sameness” often present in contemporary bespoke typography. Rather than adopting a neutral corporate tone, it draws on local visual culture to establish a more distinct and place-specific identity.
