Gustaf Vasa församling

The Company

Gustaf Vasa is one of Stockholm's most iconic churches, located at the heart of Odenplan. Since 1906, the congregation has been a progressive voice within the Church of Sweden – first with female preachers, with jazz music, and with rainbow masses. Today, 100,000 people pass by every week, yet the church rarely reaches people who need it the most.

Background

Many young adults between 25 and 35 lack spaces where they can talk openly about life – about stress, loneliness, relationships, and uncertainty – without pressure to perform or have the right answers. The church could fill exactly that need, but is instead perceived as formal, distant, and meant for someone else. The image of the church feels far from people’s everyday lives. The insight is simple: many people believe church is not for them. But Gustaf Vasa doesn't need to become something new. They need to show what they already are – a place where people have always been welcome as they are, whether it's someone’s first time or their hundredth.

Solution

The concept “Första gången” connects the church to real situations in people's everyday lives – not just baptisms and weddings, but all the uncertain in-between moments where you don't know where to turn. The campaign “Vi har hört det mesta” is activated in three parts. Posters with unexpected quotes – like "I can't be social without cocaine" – are met with the response "We've heard most things. Come as you are", breaking expectations of what a church communicates and what questions you can bring. A physical phone booth placed on Odenplan, under the headline "The first time you have a priest on speed dial," lets anyone pick up the phone and talk about anything – anonymously, without an agenda. With confidential digital chat and accessible opening hours, the church is available beyond Odenplan. Together, they move the church from ceremony to everyday life – from distant to self-evident.
